How did I get here? What did I do to deserve this?
What habits, choices, beliefs, fears, wounds, relationships, or outside nudges have formed this career area into what it is today?
I remember sitting in my car after a long day, hands still on the steering wheel, wondering when work stopped being something I did and started becoming someone I was. I wasn’t tired because I had worked hard. I was tired because I had been rented out, piece by piece. And I knew it.
Most people do not choose a career. They gradually surrender to one.
That sounds harsh. It is harsh. But maybe the real issue is not that you took a job for money. We all need money. Maybe the real issue is that what you did for money started training your mind, shaping your schedule, thinning out your relationships, numbing your convictions, and redefining what felt normal.
Quietly. Efficiently. Like an operating system running in the background.
How did I get here?
Not all at once. That is the lie. You got here through repeated yeses. Through tolerated dread. Through small compromises you renamed maturity. Through the fear of disappointing people. Through wanting safety more than aliveness. Through wanting a paycheck more than peace.
Thousands of reasons… and choices…
And then…
The other nudges. Family. Culture. Bosses. Bills. Titles. Comparison. Co-workers. The seduction of being needed. Being important. The applause.
Are you sure your career only pays your bills? Acknowledge the cost.
Has it also cost you your attention, your health, your marriage, your rest, your presence with your children, your ability to hear God without checking your phone first?
Work is never just work. It creates a life. Whether you like it or not.
So look carefully. Your calendar is telling the truth. Your body is telling the truth. Your home is telling the truth. Your irritation is telling the truth.
